Ongoing strategic communications counsel for the artist-led organization that centers art as a catalyst for creative civic engagement, discourse and direct action
Department PR began our collaboration with For Freedoms IN DECEMBER 2022, with a dedicated campaign for Eyes on Iran, a public art installation and activation. Iranian artists Sheida Soleimani, Aphrodite Désirée Navab, Z, Icy and Sot, Shirin Neshat, Mahvash Mostala, Sepideh Mehraban, and Shirin Towfiq, alongside artists Hank Willis Thomas and JR, activated New York’s FDR Four Freedoms State Park with a provocative multi-day and multi-media art installation facing the United Nations entitled Eyes on Iran.
Timed for the U.N. Women’s initiative, 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the arresting site-specific installations are focused on the power of collective sight, with eyes facing the UN and signifying the world’s eyes on Iran. Eyes on Iran amplified the mission of Woman, Life, Freedom, a campaign demanding that the Islamic Republic of Iran is removed from the Commission on the Status of Women.
An event marking the unveiling featured remarks by former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Human Rights Lawyer and director of the Strategic Litigation Project at the Atlantic Council Gissou Nia, artists Sheida Soleimani and Shirin Neshat, actor and singer Sepideh Moafi and more at FDR Four Freedoms State Park with a performance by Jon Batiste. Department PR secured more than 65 articles on the exhibition and activation in international, national and local media in print, online and broadcast with a focus on art, culture, politics and current events news coverage garnering a total of 1,281,298,984 UMV (unique views per month). Coverage highlights included The New York Times,CNN Style, Vogue,The Guardian, Forbes, New York Magazine, Smithsonian Magazine, Reuters, Corriere Della Sera, France 24, Artnet News,Hypebeast and beyond.
The campaign culminated the months-long efforts by For Freedoms and Vital Voices to remove Iran from the UN Commission on the Status of Women and we were honored to be a small part of that victory.
